In 1979 the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association (now the United Spinal Association) filed suit against the MTA, over among other issues, the lack off accessible subway stations, which was settled out of court in 1984. The settlement agreement required that the MTA make 100 "key stations" accessible by 2020 and that whenever a a station is renovated a minimum of twenty percent of the funds must be earmarked for accessibility. At the present time there are a total of fifty accessible subway and Staten Island Rail stations throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
