IN THIS UPDATE:
1. OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS TO
BECOME MEMBERS OF THE DISABLED RIDERS COALITION
If you appreciate the efforts of the Disabled Riders Coalition than we ask
that you and/or your organization consider becoming a member today. We are
in desperate need of funding in order to maintain and hopefully expand our
infrastructure.
Membership starts at only $10/year for individuals. For detailed
information or to become a member, please visit
http://www.disabledriders.org/JOIN.htm
Please note that whether or not you pay dues will have no impact on
receiving updates such as this one.
The Coalition encourages disabled riders to call the NYCT Elevator Hotline
prior to departing for a subway station in order to make sure that the
elevator is working. One out of service elevator that you WILL NOT find on
the hotline is the
elevator from the mezzanine to street at the Times Square Station This
elevator has been out of service for over a month now, sow why is it not on
the hotline? Because the New York City Transit Authority doesn't own it. It
is part of the
Times Square Tower, which is owned by Boston Properties, Inc. NYCT says
that they will only an elevator on the hotline if they own it.
We urge you to call
Robert Selsam, former Director of Planning for the MTA and current
Senior Vice-President and Regional Manager of Boston Properties New York
Office and tell him to repair the elevator! His phone number is
212-326-4055. Perhaps your calls, combined with the
press release, which we are set to issue tomorrow (subsequent to one
final visit to confirm that no progress has been made) will get them to take
action.
elevator back in service as of October 17th, 2005
First it was Memorial Day weekend, then the end of August, followed by
September 6th and finally the end of September, but alas Elevator # 313
remains out of service. According to the NYCT Office of ADA Compliance, the
elevator was inspected on September 22nd, 2005 and required only "minor
service changes", they felt that the end of September date was still on
target. Nonetheless, the elevator remains out of service and now all that
NYCT will say is "soon".
We will of course keep you updated.
Despite being the second most recent station to be certified as accessible by the NYCT Office of ADA Compliance (179th Street is the most recent), the elevators at the West 4th Street subway station have been broken more than they have been working. For the past week or so all three elevators (333-335) have been out of service. This means that disabled riders who need to use the elevator cannot get from street level to the concourse or vice versa, transfer from Sixth Avenue Line service to Eigth Avenue Line Service or switch directions on a Sixth Avenue Line Train. Riders will still be able to switch from local to express service and change directions on Eight Avenue Line Trains.
The nearest accessible Eighth Avenue Line station is at 14th Street
The nearest accessible Sixth Avenue Line Station is at 34th Street Herald
Square.
We will of course keep you updated on the status of these elevators.
If so we want your feedback. Please E-mail us at
