COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO ACCESSIBLE* STATIONS

As the
MTA is often
not expeditious in posting newly accessible subway stations on their website and
new subway maps only come out three times a year, we have decided to update our
membership with a comprehensive listing of ALL accessible stations, including
ones that have not yet made it onto the website and/or Subway map. We will
continue post such updates as new accessible stations come online so long as we
are able to confirm that they have been certified as
ADA Accessible by the
NYC Transit Office of
ADA Compliance.
Additionally, this listing provides detailed
notes based on the experiences of disabled riders, which may be of extreme
benefit, particularly to a rider visiting a station with which they are
unfamiliar. If you have any firsthand experiences that you would like to
contribute, please contact us.
*- All stations have been certified by the MTA as
ADA Accessible, unless otherwise indicated.
THIS LIST IS CURRENTLY
BEING UPDATED TO REFLECT RECENT CHANGES AND MAY NOT BE 100% ACCURATE
NB—Northbound
SB—Southbound
EB—Eastbound
WB—Westbound
Portions in
red are notes inserted by the Disabled Riders Coalition and are not
representative of statements by the MTA or NYC Department of Transportation.
**- Please note that unlike the other services described on this
page, the Staten Island Ferry is operated by the New York City Department of
Transportation and NOT by the MTA..

LIRR Concourse (which leads to turnstiles and an elevator), such ramp is not ADA
compliant as it is "slightly too long without a flat area in the middle"
(Source: NYC Transit Office of ADA Compliance). This entrance may be preferable
to many riders, particularly during inclement weather, however the Disabled
Riders Coalition cautions riders that there is no AutoGate and that the token
booth adjacent to that entrance is not open 24/7 (6:15am - 10pm). Booth is
scheduled for closing at the end of August, station agents will be "roaming" in
the area around the entrance..

Note : You must be in the conductor's car to access the

platform at Atlantic Avenue, so please insure that you board the conductor’s car
at the start of your trip. Further, because of the limited clearance for
wheelchairs on the

platform, you must follow these specific instructions for disembarking the train
at Atlantic Avenue:
If you are on a Manhattan-bound
 :
You must be in the fifth car. Position yourself at the middle set of doors in
the fifth car. The conductor is in the sixth car.
If you are on a Brooklyn-bound
 :
You must be in the conductor’s car, which is the sixth car. Position yourself at
either the second or third set of doors furthest away from the conductor’s cab.
The Disabled Riders Coalition
STRONGLY CAUTIONS riders using wheelchairs or scooters about the platform
discussed above. As there are only 24 inches between the staircase and the K
Posts (support posts found on subway platforms) getting off in the wrong car
will make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach the elevator. (The
ADA requires a
minimum of 32 inches). If you are unsure as to whether or not you are in the
correct car we STRONGLY ADVISE that you to take the following actions:
If you are on a Manhattan-bound train get off
at Franklin Avenue and transfer across the platform to the
 train.
The fourth stop will be Atlantic Avenue (Eastern Parkway - Brooklyn Museum,
Grand Army Plaza and Bergen Street are in between Franklin Avenue and Atlantic
Avenue)
If you are on a Brooklyn-bound train get off at
Nevins Street snd Transfer across the platform to the
 train.
The second stop will be Atlantic Avenue (Hoyt Street is the only stop between
Nevins Street and Atlantic Avenue).

Staten
Island Ferry
Both the Whitehall - South Ferry Terminal
(Manhattan) and the ST. George Terminal (Staten Island) were recently renovated
and are in full compliance with Americans with Disability Act Accessibility
Guidelines. However as some of the boats in use pre-date the ADA certain
aspects of them may not be fully compliant with the ADA. Nonetheless all
persons with disabilities should be able to utilize such ferries. Should
you find a gangplank or other aspect of the ferry to be difficult to navigate,
please ask a crew member for assistance. For information about specific
boats, please visit
www.siferry.com and select "Ferry Fleet", then
"Current Ferries"
Wheelchair users and other people with mobility impairments (and their
companions) can and should board on the lower level of the ferry because it is
safer during low tides. To enter on the lower level from the Manhattan side,
you go around the right side of the building until you see the guard and board
there. On the Staten Island side, follow the signs for the lower level boarding
location.
No fare is charged for use of the Staten
Island Ferry.
**- Please note that unlike the other services
described on this page, the Staten Island Ferry is operated by the New York City
Department of Transportation and NOT by the MTA.
